Recent News:

Nov 27 & 28, 2009

Both Jamie Avedon and Bobby Spivey made it down to Stuttgart, AR, for the World's Duck Calling Championships, blowing in the Intermediate and Junior Duck, respectively.  While neither placed, I was very proud of not only how both did on stage, but how they dealt with disappointment.  Both are very talented AND class acts.

5 of us showed up for the World's Duck Calling Championship: Justin Culver, Trevor Shannahan, Teddy Hoover, Jacob Stanley and myself.  Trevor was the only one to make the finals, and he not only made the finals, but was tied for 1st after 2 rounds.  He ended up in 3rd place, "got his picture taken" and really did an outstanding job.  This kid has a boatload of talent and apparently no nerves, 'cause he blew the best he ever has on the World stage and saved nothing.  One day, I'd like to feel like I did that!  Not bad for a rookie...congrats Trev!  Also congrats to Mike Anderson who won the 2009 World's Duck Calling Championship, nice job!

Easton, MD again, at the World Goose Contests...again, no one competing in the goose, but again, some success in the duck...

Jamie Avedon pulled off a great win in the Mason Dixon Regional Junior Duck, with Bobby Spivey finishing 4th as well.

Scott Bauswell finished 4th in the Mason Dixon Regional Duck, on a rare year he didn't qualify for the World's.

Easton, MD at the MD State Contests...I don't think I had any goose callers there, but we did well in the duck contests:

Bobby Spivey and Jamie Avedon started it off finishing 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the Maryland State Junior Duck.

Trevor Shannahan won the Maryland State Duck, qualifying for his first time for the World's Duck Calling Championship, Justin Culver followed him in 2nd.

Justin Culver pulled out another 2nd place in the Chesapeake Bay Open Regional Duck.

And Justin Culver won his first qualifier to the World's Duck Calling Championship by winning the Susquehanna Flats Regional Duck, followed in 2nd by John Taylor.

All were blowing Acrylic Deceivers, except for Jamie who blows a Delrin Deceiver.

I took the calls to the road and headed down to the Richmond Bass Pro for the Virginia State Duck and Goose Calling Contests.  My main objective was to try out my NEW POLY DECEIVER on stage.  I ended up winning the Virginia State Open Duck with it, just beating out Teddy Hoover who also happens to blow an ASGC Acrylic Deceiver.  I've got to admit to being a little excited about this NEW POLY DECEIVER.  It will be alot cheaper than the acrylic and more people will be able to get their hands on one.  It's already proven itself a winner in it's first contest!  Give it a listen on the DUCK CALLS page.

I think I shocked everyone (most of all myself) by winning the Virginia State Open Goose.  Trevor Shannnahan also blew an ASGC Canadensis and finished 2nd.

I ended up in 3rd in both The VA State Open Team Duck & Goose, teamed with Jon Walczak in the Team Duck and Trevor in the Team Goose.

Thanks to DU, Bass Pro and all of the volunteers who made the contests possible.
Sept 26 & 27, 2009
I attended the Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show in Tuckerton, NJ, this year.  This is always a fun event with lots of vendors and food and a huge variety of contests to enter, including decoy carving, a retriever test, the World Skeetshoot from a Sneakbox Championship, and of course duck and goose calling contests, among others.

In the calling contests, I teamed up with calling legend Al Dager in the Barnegat Bay Team Duck Calling Championship.  I've known and competed against Al since the mid-90's, but this was the first time we had ever called together as a team and now I'm glad I asked him, 'cause we won!  It was a good day to be named "Al" as I also won the Barnegat Bay Open Duck Calling Championship and Al Dager won the Barnegat Bay Open Goose Calling Championship.  I used an ASGC Deceiver for both wins.    Eric Sweiderk was blowing an ASGC Deceiver in the State Duck contest, and was doing well until the wheels came off (lost his lips!) and he ended up in 4th.  Eric's son Josh picked up the slack and went on to win the New Jersey State Junior Duck Calling Championship, also blowing an ASGC Deceiver.  Congrats Josh, I believe that's his first win!
